Carbon fiber tubes can be used for almost everything, from strong frames of a bike to lightweight applications in drones. Such carbon fiber tubes are manufactured to be very strong and light and they serve multiple purposes for different kinds of uses. However, how do you choose the right carbon fiber tube when there is more than one option that can meet your specified needs?

Different Types of Carbon Fiber Tubes

Carbon Fiber Roll-Wrapped Tubes

By rolling several layers of carbon fiber fabric around a mandrel, carbon fiber roll-wrapped tubes can be produced. Strength and stiffness are provided to the tube from both sides by the layers that run in different directions. The tube is subsequently cured after wrapping. Because the fibers are layered in multiple directions, carbon fiber roll-wrapped tubes are very strong and stiff. They can bear multidirectional forces; hence, they have high feasibility of application in strength-critical applications. These properties make roll-wrapped tubes suitable for most works carrying a bike frame, a camera rig, an aircraft part, etc. But carbon fiber roll-wrapped tubes are somewhat more complicated to manufacture than other sorts of carbon fiber tubes, which is why they are occasionally a little more costly.

Pultruded Carbon Fiber Tubes

Pultruded Carbon fiber tubes involve the passing of continuous strands of carbon fiber through a resin bath, and then through a die (a mold that determines the shape of the tube). The fibers are in one direction, usually along the length of the tube, not as in woven fabric. Roll-wrapped Carbon fiber tubes are not only more difficult to manufacture but are also much more expensive to produce when compared to Pultruded tubes. Pultruded tubes can bear load only in one direction as all fibers run in the same direction; that is, they are suitable for beams/rods only. On the other hand, unlike carbon fiber roll-wrapped tubes, carbon fiber pultruded tubes are not very strong when forces come from other directions rather than along the length. This makes them less ideal for applications that need strength in all directions.

Choosing the Right Tube for Your Application

Now that you know the main types of carbon fiber tubes, the next step is to decide which one is best for your project. Here are some of the key factors to consider:

• Strength and Stiffness Needs - Consider how much strength and stiffness your project is going to require. If you need a tube capable of withstanding stress in many directions, such as in a drone frame, a carbon fibre roll-wrapped tube would be fine. On the other hand, if your project only needs strength along one direction (like in a fishing rod or simple beam), a carbon fiber pultruded tube should work fine and be more cost-effective.
• Weight Requirements - One of the main reasons to choose carbon fiber is to keep weight down. Both roll-wrapped and pultruded tubes are lightweight, but if you’re building something where every gram counts (like in racing drones or bikes), you might want to lean towards roll-wrapped tubes since they offer better all-around performance for their weight.
• Environment and Conditions - Consider the conditions your carbon fiber tubes will be exposed to. Will they be used outdoors in high heat or a humid environment? Though both tube types work well under different conditions, roll-wrapped tubes generally do better for durability and handling extreme conditions.
• Budget - Your budget will then come in handy. carbon fiber roll-wrapped tubes have superior performance; however, they cost more. In case your budget for your project is low, carbon fiber pultruded tubes provide a cheaper throughway to enjoy the service with relatively good strength.
